Most pool ladder replacement parts come down to six pieces: steps, bumpers, escutcheons, anchor wedges, deck flanges and the bolts that hold it all together. The key is to measure first. Match the rail tube size, the tread width and any part number on the old piece, and the new part will fit. This guide covers each part, what to measure and which ones we stock in our pool ladder parts range.
How to identify the pool ladder replacement parts you need
Before you order, get these numbers off your ladder.
- Rail diameter. Measure across the tube. Inground ladders commonly use 1.9 in tubing. Above ground deck ladders often use 1.5 in rails, and some rails are 2 in.
- Step length. Measure the old tread end to end, or indent to indent where it meets the rails.
- Bolt size. Measure the length, head included, and the diameter of an old step bolt.
- Part numbers. Look for a brand or number molded or stamped into the old part. Take a photo of it.
When the numbers do not match a part exactly, do not force it. A loose fit on a ladder is a wobble you will feel every time you climb.
Pool ladder steps replacement
Treads crack, go brittle in the sun and wear smooth. Replace them as soon as you see damage, because people step on rungs without looking. For a pool ladder steps replacement, match two things: the rail size the step mounts to and the tread length.
| Step | Material | Size | Rating | Hardware |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stainless steps 6 pack | 304 stainless, rubber tread | 19.69 in long, for 1.9 in rails | 300 lb | 12 bolts, 12 nuts |
| Stainless steps 3 pack | Stainless, rubber | 19.69 in long, for 1.9 in rails | 300 lb | 6 bolts, 6 nuts |
| 18 in universal steps | ABS plastic | 18 in universal | 300 lb | 6 stainless screws |
| Hydrotools 87901 step | Polypropylene | About 18 in indent to indent, 1.9 in poles | Not listed | Not included |
If your treads are all the same age, replace the set so every step feels the same underfoot. A 6 pack covers a ladder with up to six treads.
Pool ladder bumpers
Bumpers are the rubber plugs on the feet of an inground ladder. They keep bare metal off the liner or pool wall and close the tube end to water and debris. Swap them when they go hard, crack or keep falling out. Every bumper we carry is made for 1.9 in tubing:
- 1.9 inch bumpers 4 pack: white rubber, 2.25 in base, 1 in tall, tapered plug.
- Bumpers 4 pack in blue or white: thick base with a ring texture.
- White rubber bumpers 2 pack: 2.28 x 2.28 x 1.45 in, one pair for one ladder.
- 1.9 inch end plugs 2 pack: tapered, 2.25 in outer diameter.
- Inground ladder bumpers, 2 or 4 pack: conical plug, UV resistant rubber.
To fit one, pull the old bumper off and press the new plug into the tube until the base sits flat. No tools needed.
Escutcheons
An escutcheon is the round cover plate where an inground ladder rail meets the deck. Solid ring plates slide over the tube, so you lift the ladder out of its anchors to fit a new one.
- 1.9 inch escutcheon 4 pack: stainless, 4.2 in across.
- Polished 1.9 inch escutcheon 4 pack: mirror polished 304 stainless.
- 316 stainless escutcheon 2 pack: the supplier rates it for salt water pools.
- 2 inch escutcheon 4 pack: for 2 in rails, 4 in across.
Not sure which grade you need? Our 304 vs 316 stainless steel guide explains the difference.
Pool ladder anchor wedges
If an inground ladder rocks even after you tighten it, the wedge in the pool ladder anchor is often worn or corroded. The wedge sits on a bolt inside the anchor socket. Tightening the bolt draws it up to lock the tube in place.
- PW-4C anchor wedges 2 pack: bronze, for 4 in Hanover style bronze anchors such as PS-4019-C, PS-4019-BC and PS-4019-ABZ. Check your old part number against the cross references on the product page.
- Brass wedge anchor kit 2 pack: solid brass wedges with 5/16 in BSW stainless bolts, 2.14 in long, for standard 4 in rail anchors.
If the anchor socket itself is cracked or loose in the concrete, a new wedge will not fix it. That is a deck repair for a pool pro.
Deck flanges
Deck flanges hold the rails of an above ground deck ladder. Measure the outside of your rail before you choose.
- 1.5 inch deck flange 2 pack: for rails 1.5 in or less, three pre-drilled holes, side locking screw.
- 1.5 inch brackets 2 pack: 304 stainless with a white coating, for 1.5 in (38 mm) rails.
- 1.6 inch deck flanges 2 pack: 1.6 in inner diameter.
- Cast aluminum flange 2 pack: surface mount for posts up to 1.5 in, deck screws sold separately.
Bolts: small pool ladder replacement parts that matter
Rusty or stripped step bolts are a quick swap, and worth doing when you change treads. The stainless pool ladder bolts 10 pack has ten 304 stainless bolt and nut sets, each bolt 3.13 in long with the head and 0.3 in across. Match those numbers to your old bolts first. The Hydrotools step above ships without bolts, so plan for them.
Cleaning rust stains
Stainless ladders can pick up brown surface stains around a pool. Light staining usually wipes off.
- Use a gentle cleaner made for stainless steel and a soft cloth or non-scratch pad.
- Rub with the grain of the finish.
- Rinse with fresh water and wipe dry.
Avoid steel wool and wire brushes. They scratch the finish and can leave bits of plain steel behind that rust. If a stain keeps coming back on one part, check that part for pitting and replace it. The same goes for any pool ladder replacement parts that look worn when you clean.
FAQ
How to replace pool ladder steps?
Measure the old tread and rail size, remove the old bolts and step, set the new step between the rails and bolt it in with the hardware provided, or new bolts if the pack has none. Snug the bolts evenly. See our guide on how to install a pool ladder for the rest of the setup.
What size are pool ladder bumpers?
Most inground ladder bumpers we sell are made for standard 1.9 in tubing, with a base of about 2.25 in across. Measure your tubing before you order.
How to remove rust from pool ladder?
